Dude, that's not what I meant when I told you to "carry some extra magazines."

BLACKHAT

The Patron-Exclusive Abridged Script

FADE IN:

EXT. EARTH OR THEREABOUTS

The CAMERA pans across PLANET EARTH. It snaps down until it focuses on a NUCLEAR POWER PLANT in HONG KONG. Then it KEEPS GOING into the CONTROL ROOM towards a COMPUTER SCREEN.

IT WORKER IN AUDIENCE

Oh no.

It clips THROUGH THE SCREEN and travels along BUNDLES OF CABLE.

IT WORKER IN AUDIENCE

Goddamnit, no! NO!

The CABLES segue into a MOTHERBOARD. The CAMERA keeps ZOOMING IN and now shows a VALLEY MADE OF SILICON. A SILICON VALLEY, IF YOU WILL.

IT WORKER IN AUDIENCE

Fuck! Why do they always resort to this Tron bullshit?

The VALLEY lights up, showing CLUSTERS OF INFORMATION as they MOVE THROUGH THE COMPUTER.

IT WORKER IN AUDIENCE

(walks out)

This PROCESS, which is known as "HACKING" in certain circles, causes the PLANT'S COOLANT PUMPS to EXPLODE.

INT. FBI OFFICE

CHINESE OFFICIAL WANG LEEHOM is meeting with FBI AGENT VIOLA DAVIS.

WANG LEEHOM

Sorry I'm late, you know how Michael Mann gets carried away with establishing shots of city skylines.

VIOLA DAVIS

So I hear a hacker managed to cripple a Hong Kong nuclear power plant? One of our plants was hit by the same malware, but it didn't get past our firewalls. Good thing we didn't import those from China!

WANG LEEHOM

If I could take a look at the malware you intercepted, I might be able to determine the identity of this hacker. Do we first need to butt heads over interagency red tape and international bureaucracy for that to happen?

VIOLA DAVIS

I know I usually play headstrong characters and that's what my acting in this movie will bring across too, but apparently I'm meant to constantly roll over and go along with everything. So yeah, here's the code.

WANG LEEHOM

I would also like to enlist the help of my sister Tang Wei. She's a network engineer and there's nobody else I trust more on this. Don't worry, we're not pulling another Miami Vice where she'll have to pretend she's part Cuban or anything.

VIOLA DAVIS

(intense, headstrong stare)

Sure, fine, whatever.

WANG looks over the CODE.

WANG LEEHOM

Fuck, how can I make this look exciting? I know, I'll tap the keyboard really hard in frustration and swipe some stuff off my desk! BLARGH!

VIOLA DAVIS

Wang, there's been another attack. Our guy hacked his way into the Chicago trade exchange and ran up soy futures.

WANG LEEHOM

Not soy! Is there no limit to his depravity? Hmm, I see here that the hacker used some code that my college roommate and I wrote as a lark before he went to prison. Please ignore the fact that this is exactly how Sneakers opened.

VIOLA DAVIS

Aha, and hackers always leave in a backdoor, right? Right?

WANG LEEHOM

No, that's one hacking cliché we're thankfully avoiding. However, my roommate was the chief architect of the code, so we'll need to bring him in on this as well.

VIOLA DAVIS

(crosses arms defensively)

Okay, not a problem.

WANG LEEHOM

He's doing thirteen years for hacking four banks to the tune of millions in damages.

VIOLA DAVIS

(shakes head to indicate disagreement)

I'll get the Department of Justice to release him.

Ah ah ah, you didn't say the magic word
