Actually, in the Terminator universe it is bullshit. Think about it: John Conner sends his own father back through time. If he hadn't, he wouldn't have been conceived and therefore would't exist. If he didn't exist, he wouldn't be able to send anyone back through time. That kind of circular plot would make no sense in a universe running on free will alone.
