The boy/girl reveals that she is, in fact, a girl and is currently menstruating meaning the creatures will be ravenously pursuing the group. They needed light to see and to repel the creatures but the creatures would not have surrounded the group the WHOLE TIME they were running with the LIGHT-SLED to the ship had it not been for the blood.
