New Server
If you are reading this post, it means that the DNS alterations have propagated to your ISP and you’re now viewing this site from my new server. My old one was somewhat unreliable, and hopefully this new one will mean less downtime.
I’ve been meaning to upgrade Wordpress and move to the new server for a while, but I kept putting it off because upgrading Wordpress is a pain (I had to make a lot of hacks to the source code to make this site work correctly).
However, as a result of my recent front-page-status on reddit.com, kottke.org, waxy.org, and metafilter.com, the fact that I hadn’t upgraded Wordpress in a year finally bit me in the ass, resulting in some bizarre hack that allowed an attacker to stick male enhancement pill links into my posts and rss feeds. I could procrastinate no longer.
In any case, the boner pill links are gone now, my version of Wordpress is up to date, and you’re viewing the site from a brand new server.
Here’s the important bit: If you posted a comment recently and it doesn’t appear here, it means that you posted it after I backed up my database but before I finished the server move. It’s gone forever. Please repost it.

Hear, hear!

I’m not a huge fan of it either, for similar reasons to why you don’t like it.
The issue is this:
Normally I got around 50 comments on the most popular posts, which was enough for one page. The Indy script got over 150, which was way too many for a single page, so I had to paginate.
When stuff is paginated, if it goes in ascending order, all new comments will show up on later pages, meaning you have to click to get there. This severely descreases any kind of incentive to comment, as the comment won’t show up on the page (you have to go out of your way to pull up the appropriate page).
I’m going to leave it like this for a while and see if I (and everyone else) can adjust to it, because I think it makes more sense from a practical standpoint. If I still hate it in a few months, I’ll change it.

What about having it where you default to the last page? I’ve seen forums/blogs etc that behave like that. Can’t think of them offhand, but I’ve seen them. If there’s multiple pages, it defaults to the most “recent” one.
June 26th, 2008 at 7:34 pmYeah, I’ve seen that too. What say ye, Rod? Is that even an option here?
June 26th, 2008 at 9:31 pmAlright, fair enough.
I’ve made that change and put it out there, so the last page is the default.
I dunno how I feel about it, the reverse order thing was starting to grow on me. ;)
I’ll leave it like this for now.
Thanks for providing useful feedback without calling me a stupid asshole.
June 27th, 2008 at 7:32 amI was so confused when first reading this page “is this page repeating itself?” but then i found out you changed it.
June 27th, 2008 at 11:12 amI like the compromise. Hail Rod the Fair!
June 27th, 2008 at 4:17 pmyeah I think this will work out if you let it “grow” on you for a few days… :-D
June 27th, 2008 at 8:23 pmWasn’t expecting it, so I was disoriented to start. But I’m feeling better now…
