A second viewing of the film, for me, confirmed what I hadn't noticed first time around - too much time had been spent in certain areas and not enough time had been spent in others. The love story was an integral part of the novel, but for it to really work, it needed more time than the writers were able to give it. In the cinema, I believed it - on DVD, it felt like a tacked-on plot device.Perhaps less time could have been spent at the poker table, or maybe both of the action scenes could have been trimmed down a little?
