It's unconventional, because Kubrik has an unconventional mind, and unconventional ideas. You think Kubrik, and Speilberg didn't realize going in that this was not an normal ending.
to me seeing the world without humans only strengthenes the comparison made at the beginning with Humans to God, because it makes the relationship (between robots and humans) intangible and mysterious to the robots, as our relationship with God is. Quite an interesting comparison. Yes the ending could have been earlier, and everyone would have been satisfied, but thats not what kubrik wanted. He wanted you to think about it some more.
PS.
this is a movie about ROBOTS, not ALIENS. It's obvious the creatures at the end are decedents of the robot race. Get with it, use your minds!!
PPS I know it's all a joke and in good fun. No offense taken, and I hope none given :)

Im suprised to find no one has commented on the fact that this would be funny EXCEPT, the ending written by Kubrik. By the way, I happen to love AI. It gives a peek into a possible future. As Arthur C. Clarke said :"The last machine we'll have to make is one that's smarter than ourselves." Machine intelligence should surpass us early next century in every measurable way. I thought AI was a visual treat, especially Rouge City. Dammit, I want to go there now! lol. And where's Gigilo Jane when you need her?

Excellent job! Spielberg couldn't find any notes on him from Kubrick's notes, (hint, hint,... he wasn't in Brian Aldiss' original short story, either!). And so, "I'm just singing in the rain, and looking for Gigolo Jane!" And Teddy says, "I'm NOT - a TOY!" Oh yes you are!
But don't get me wrong, I do like many of Spielberg's creations. Even this remake of The Wizard of OZ where the story doesn't really matter, but the production does.

Very funny, indeed! And bravo for Gigolo Joe! Seriously, though, between this and "I, Robot" (I'm a huge Asimov fan and wanted to claw my eyeballs out at that one), I've lost nearly all hope that Hollywood can do robots without dumbing it down. In fact, before I started reading this site, I put up with a lot of crap movies, not even crap in a fun way, just hoping it would be good this time. Thanks, Rod, for making me realize that I had a right to expect better. Oh, and Haley Joel Osment made a deal with the devil.

"I'm Robocock: dead or alive, you're cumming with me." i mean there was something else in there about an ice age or what ever but im sure we all assumed The Robots Did It in order to enslave/slaughter the human race
Either way, this was hilarious and as much as Spielbergo can sometimes weave film into gold, he can weave into....this, too.I'm gonna go watch Empire of The Sun and remember the good old days when Spielberg knew how to direct kids and not make me want to punch someone...usually the kid

isnt there a line in the film where they say they're robots?

i mean i was semi concious at that point having eaten my own face out of desperation, but i remember hearing 'we are what robots become since we, off screen which we can guarantee pisses off the audience all the more, developed to a scary level of superiority and intelligence and took over the whole planet earth, presumably enslaving and/or slaughtering the human race in the process, and redesigned our selves to be more efficient or something since lets face it, the human design is sort of a fugly mess' or something to that affect, like i say, face chewed off...<br
